Samburu: Kenya’s northern safari landscapes
Samburu brings a different kind of safari landscape into view: dry plains, thorn trees, rocky slopes and a ribbon of riverine greenery. Come for northern wildlife and time to understand how animals live in this country. Plan it as a distinct stay, with room for early drives and the heat of the middle of the day.
A different landscape, a different safari
The Ewaso Nyiro River and its vegetation form a contrast with the drier country around them. A drive can move between shade along the river and more open ground, where animals are spread across scrub and sandy tracks. River levels and the distribution of wildlife change with rainfall; the landscape is not a fixed scene.

Samburu is a useful complement to the Mara because the habitats and visual character differ. It particularly suits travellers curious about species, landscapes and guide-led interpretation. If every drive is judged only by how quickly a large predator appears, much of its interest is missed.
Wildlife worth looking for
The “Samburu Special Five” is a useful introduction to the region’s wildlife: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich. The name describes a group of northern species associated with this safari region, not a promise that you will see all five or a claim that they live nowhere else.
Look at the differences as well as the names: the fine stripes of a Grevy’s zebra, the pattern of a reticulated giraffe, or a gerenuk’s browsing posture. Elephants, predators and birds add other possibilities. A patient drive may spend as much time observing feeding and movement as searching for the next animal.
Heat, vegetation and access influence what can be found on a particular outing. Your guide can interpret tracks and recent observations, but sightings remain dependent on wild animals.
Understand the Samburu region before choosing a base
Samburu National Reserve
Samburu National Reserve lies on the northern side of the Ewaso Nyiro. Its river habitats are an important part of the classic Samburu safari experience. Staying in or visiting the reserve places a different emphasis on the day from being based farther away in the surrounding country.
Kalama Conservancy
Kalama is a separate conservancy to the north of the reserve. Its rocky and open landscapes can provide a contrasting base for a northern stay. An excursion from Kalama into Samburu National Reserve involves its own driving and access arrangements; it should be described explicitly in your itinerary.
Buffalo Springs and Shaba
These are distinct neighbouring reserves in the wider region. Buffalo Springs lies across the river from Samburu, while Shaba is farther east. A booking described broadly as “Samburu” does not automatically include all three reserves or access to Kalama. The precise accommodation location, airstrip and included activities should agree with one another.
Reaching Samburu by road or scheduled air
The road journey from Nairobi travels north through changing central Kenyan landscapes before reaching drier country. Allow it a substantial part of a travel day. The chosen base, traffic, breaks and final access tracks affect the overall journey; it should not be planned as a quick transfer followed by a full safari day.
Scheduled air can reduce the long road movement. For a Kalama stay, the flight and receiving vehicle must be coordinated for the agreed airstrip. A landing elsewhere in the wider Samburu region may mean a different transfer, so “Samburu airport” is not a sufficiently precise booking instruction.
Connections onwards to the Mara can use stops, a through-service or a Nairobi connection, depending on the ticketed operation. The aircraft is shared with other passengers even when your transfers and safari vehicle are private. Stay long enough to settle into the north
Two nights can create a focused northern chapter, with one complete day between arrival and departure. Three nights give more flexibility for a reserve excursion, time in the surrounding conservancy and a quieter afternoon. Travel time matters: the same number of nights can feel different after a long road arrival or a flight with a convenient handover.
It often makes sense to concentrate drives in the cooler parts of the day and leave a proper midday break. Families may prefer shorter outings; couples can retain an afternoon without a planned activity. A pool or shaded resting area can be useful, but its availability and suitability depend on the accommodation selected.
ACCOMMODATION
Choose between the setting you want to stay in and the areas you want to explore. A river-oriented camp, a reserve lodge and hillside accommodation in Kalama offer different views, access and movement around the property. An elevated setting may involve slopes or steps; discuss mobility needs before confirming a room.
Premium accommodation may use tented rooms or more solid structures with en-suite bathrooms and outdoor sitting space. Check the actual bed configuration, cooling, bathroom privacy and separation between family rooms. Fans, pools and air-conditioning are property-specific features, not universal northern safari inclusions.
The dated quotation identifies the proposed property, room occupancy, meal arrangement and included reserve or conservancy activities. It should also make clear whether drives are exclusive to your party. The accommodation description on this page does not reserve a particular room.
Heat, rain and respectful encounters
Dry spells can increase the importance of river and water-source habitats, while rain changes the colour of the country and where animals range. Dry country can still receive heavy rain, with consequences for tracks and crossings. Bring sun protection, light layers and something warm for an early start, together with dust protection for equipment. Drinking water and breaks should be easy to fit into the day. If you are travelling with children, discuss their heat tolerance and activity interests when choosing accommodation and drive length.
Where a hosted cultural or knowledge-sharing visit is proposed, ask who is hosting it, what has been agreed and whether a separate charge applies. Participation and photography should be based on consent. No community visit or conservation contribution is implied merely by choosing a Samburu stay.

Questions about Samburu
Is Kalama Conservancy the same place as Samburu National Reserve?
No. They are separate areas within the wider Samburu safari region. A Kalama base can be combined with a reserve visit, but that movement and access must form part of the agreed programme.
Why visit Samburu as well as the Mara?
Samburu adds dry-country habitats, a different landscape and northern species. The combination is most useful when you have enough time to stay in both, rather than spending much of the trip transferring between them.
Are the Samburu Special Five guaranteed?
No. They describe wildlife you may look for in this region. Weather, habitat, animal movement and the time available all affect sightings. A successful visit can include learning about these species without completing a list.
Is Samburu suitable for a first safari?
Yes, for travellers interested in its landscape and wildlife and comfortable with the journey involved. It can work well alongside a contrasting region. The right pacing and accommodation are particularly important if heat or lengthy road travel is a concern.
How does a Samburu stay work for children?
Plan around age, heat, room layout and time in the vehicle. A private vehicle can make shorter drives and breaks easier. Accommodation and activity age limits differ, and an open or unfenced setting requires the family to follow staff guidance.
Can I fly from Samburu to the Mara without returning to my Nairobi accommodation?
A scheduled northern-to-Mara itinerary may allow that, but the flight can make stops or connect through Nairobi. The confirmed carrier, airstrips and timetable determine the arrangement. It should not be assumed to be a nonstop flight.
Should I bring a large suitcase for the northern stay?
If you are using safari aircraft, plan for soft luggage and the ticketed carrier’s combined weight limit; around 15 kg is a common basis. Tell us about substantial camera equipment or special luggage before booking. Storage or onward transport for excess bags must be arranged, not assumed.
